Take 9: The Woman in the Yard
Horror and I are hit or miss. Going into this week’s film, it really could have gone either way. I didn’t know a whole lot about The Woman in the Yard- I didn’t know there was a book and I had only seen a quick commercial, but the runtime spoke my language: and hour and twenty-eight so at least it would be over quickly if it wasn’t any good.
The first half-hour or so is a slow build for sure. We are witness to the feeling of loss clearly presentan with this family. The point is really driven home that they have been THROUGH it. The cast is small, a mother, a teenaged son, a young daughter, and their little dog too. We really get to know each spend a long time with these characters. There is a whooooole lotta tension in this house, especially between the mother and the son. And noises. So many loud noises. In case you forgot this was a horror movie, the random loud noises are there to remind you. Often.
The mysterious, cryptic woman does not help alleviate whatever is going on and eventually, it starts getting weird. Very weird. The last this of the movie is a strange, confusing mess. We get some flashbacks, reversals, and callbacks and the action does kick in, but boy is it confusing. There are definitely ideas and concepts here SOMEWHERE, but I’ll be darned if I know what they are. There are twists and turns but they don’t seem to serve much of a purpose other than to keep the audience confused, right though to the end. I THINK I know how it ends, but then again, do I?
My score: 6. I wanted to like this, but really can’t say that I did. I appreciate the time and effort that went into the character development which is where this movie shined, but the actual horro—- what?
So yeah, that’s all I got for this week. Don’t be afraid to argue with me and convince me of what I missed out on because at as it stands, you could have left this one alone in yard…
