Take 7: Novocaine

We’ve been here before, no? Seemed like Crank all over, but I was just hoping I’d actually like it. And for the most part, I did.

The actors/characters are probably the main difference for me. Jack Quade as Nathan Cane- likable. He’s playing the same character as on The Boys- the relatable every man. Amber Midthunder- likable. As much as I like Jason Stratham, I am not him, he’s not me. But these two- I was really rooting for them, especially the rom-com aspect. I was actually into Sherry exposing Nathan to things he’d never experienced. “We’re all hiding something. We’re just looking for someone we can sho it to.” Good stuff.

And then, as with movies like this, it does get absurd. VERY. They explained the rules early: he didn’t feel pain. He could bite through his tongue and bleed to death. He’s not Wolverine or Deadpool. Got it! That’s probably why I found myself unable to watch what was going on and look away several times. By humanizing it, it hit differently for sure.

Absurdity aside, I enjoyed. It was fun. There were twists. There was gore. There was humor. By the end however, I was ready for it to end.

My score, 7.5, maybe an 8.

Well, that does it for this week. Weigh-in with your thoughts.

And until next week’s shot of adrenaline…
